After you click Generate citation, compare the authors, title, venue, date, pages, and DOI or URL with the original source. “Format: Ready” means the fields can be formatted; “Metadata: Unverified” means you still need to confirm the record.
When the required fields are complete, click Add to list. Use Up, Down, or drag a row to follow the citation sequence required by your paper or target venue. Many IEEE venues use first appearance. Reuse the same reference number whenever you cite that source again.

The current IEEE Citation Generator is free to use and does not require an account. You can create citations, build a reference list, and export it from your browser. Your list is not connected to a user profile, so export a backup before clearing browser data or changing devices.
You can enter a DOI, a public URL, an ISBN, or a source title. A DOI usually gives the strongest match for a journal or conference paper. Use an ISBN for a book and a public URL for a web page. Title search is useful when no identifier is available, but the result needs especially careful checking.
The generator supports journal articles, conference papers, books, websites, and blog posts. Under More types, you can also choose theses or dissertations, patents, technical standards, and other online sources such as preprints or datasets.
Check the input for extra characters or typing errors, then try a DOI or ISBN when one is available. In Batch import, you can retry only the failed row. A metadata provider may sometimes be unavailable even when your input is valid. If the lookup still fails, choose the source type and enter the details manually.
Yes. Select the appropriate source type and complete the required fields in the reference editor. Manual entry is useful for unusual sources, older publications, private documents, or records that metadata providers cannot find. Check every field against the original source before adding the citation to your list.
Yes. Open Paste an existing citation and paste the existing reference. The parser can place some of its contents into editable fields. This is a rough extraction feature and does not verify the source. Review every extracted field before using the result.

The lookup returned a record from a metadata provider, but IEEE Citation Generator has not independently confirmed every critical field against the original source. Review the author names and title first, then check the publication details and identifier. The label asks you to verify the record before submission.
Ready means the required fields are present and no current formatting warnings remain. Needs review means the required fields are present, but a warning still needs attention, such as a missing access date or an unconfirmed journal abbreviation. Incomplete means a required field is missing. Complete it before adding, copying, or exporting the citation. These labels describe formatting readiness and do not verify the source itself.
Compare the preview with the original publication page or document. Confirm the author order and title, then review the publication venue and date. Check page information and the DOI or URL where relevant. Instructions from your course, institution, conference, or journal take priority when they differ.
The generator creates a numbered IEEE reference entry and lets you copy its matching in-text citation, such as [3]. Use Copy in-text in the preview or the bracketed number in your saved list. Insert that number in your paper wherever you use the source. The current tool does not insert citations into your document or scan your manuscript automatically.

Yes. Use Import BibTeX to select a BibTeX file. The current importer accepts files up to 1 MB and reads up to 100 entries. Complete records can be added to your list, while duplicates and incomplete entries may be skipped. Imported records still need to be checked against their original sources.
Read the BibTeX to IEEE import guideYour working list is stored in the current browser using local storage. It normally remains available after a page refresh. There is no cloud library or cross-device synchronization. Clearing the site data, switching browsers, or using another device will not restore the same list, so download a backup when the work matters.
Your working reference list and exported files are handled in your browser. When you request metadata, the source identifier may be sent to providers such as Crossref, Semantic Scholar, OpenAlex, or Open Library. A public URL may also be retrieved to read its visible metadata. Do not enter passwords, access tokens, private links, or unpublished sensitive information.
You can copy an individual citation as plain text or rich text and copy the completed reference list at once. The full list can be exported as TXT, BibTeX, LaTeX, or DOCX. Word export is created in your browser. Complete any required fields and review remaining warnings before exporting.
