To convert RIS to IEEE references, import the .ris file into Zotero, correct its source types and fields, then create a bibliography in IEEE style. Start by counting records so you can account for the final output. We checked three real publications and ran their RIS records through a local conversion test on October 15, 2026. The sample includes a journal article, a conference paper, and a book, plus a separate record with deliberately removed fields. This site's importer accepts BibTeX; the direct RIS workflow uses Zotero.
Inspect the RIS file before importing
Open a copy of the file in a plain-text editor. A RIS record usually begins with TY - and ends with ER -. Count those pairs before conversion. Our three-source RIS file contains one journal article, one conference paper, and one book. We prepared these tutorial records from the linked publications.
TY - JOUR
AU - LeCun, Yann
AU - Bengio, Yoshua
AU - Hinton, Geoffrey
TI - Deep learning
JF - Nature
JO - Nature
VL - 521
IS - 7553
PY - 2015
DA - 2015/05
SP - 436
EP - 444
DO - 10.1038/nature14539
UR - https://www.nature.com/articles/nature14539
ER -Each author has a separate AU line. Keep that order and the comma separating family and given names. Combining three people into one line can import them as one creator. Save edits as UTF-8 plain text with the .ris extension. Renaming a PDF or a formatted bibliography to .ris does not supply these fields.
The journal paper and book both have the title Deep Learning, with different capitalization. They are distinct works with different authors and identifiers. A title-only duplicate check would be a poor reason to discard either one.
Import the file and check the source types
In Zotero desktop, choose File → Import… → A file, select the RIS file, and finish the import wizard. Keep the imported items in a separate collection so you can compare its contents with the original file. Select each record and inspect its item type and fields in the right-hand pane.
| RIS field | What it supplies | What to inspect after import |
|---|---|---|
TY | JOUR, CONF, or BOOK | Journal Article, Conference Paper, or Book. A wrong type changes which fields the style can print. |
AU and TI | Creators and work title | One person per creator row; full title and original byline order. |
JF and JO | Journal title and journal abbreviation in this Zotero translator | Our Nature record uses both. Exporters vary; check the resulting Publication and Journal Abbr fields. |
T2 and C3 | Conference name and proceedings title for CONF | The sample supplies both. Check that Proceedings Title names the published proceedings. |
PY, DA, VL, IS | Year, fuller date, volume, and issue | A fuller date can take precedence over the year. Do not leave conflicting years in the file. |
SP and EP | First and last pages | 436-444 for Nature; 770-778 for the CVPR paper. |
DO and UR | DOI and source URL | Keep the DOI in its own field. A URL containing a DOI is not a reliable substitute for that mapping. |
PB, CY, SN | Publisher, publication place, and ISBN for the book | MIT Press and ISBN 9780262035613 identify the print edition used here. |
We checked these mappings against Zotero's RIS translator, revision dated January 5, 2026. If Proceedings Title is empty after import, fill it from the publication record before formatting. All three items can import successfully while a field remains empty.
For a manuscript already using linked Zotero citations, continue with the Zotero IEEE style and refresh workflow. The standalone list below is useful when you need formatted references to copy or save.
Check three real records and repair missing fields
Compare each imported item with its publication page. Start with these fields.
| Record | Verified fields | Conversion check |
|---|---|---|
| LeCun, Bengio, and Hinton | Nature, vol. 521, no. 7553, pp. 436-444, May 2015; DOI 10.1038/nature14539. | Keep the journal, volume, issue, and pages together. This is the review article. |
| He, Zhang, Ren, and Sun | CVPR 2016 proceedings, pp. 770-778; DOI 10.1109/CVPR.2016.90. | Use the published conference record. Its 2015 preprint date does not belong in this proceedings entry. |
| Goodfellow, Bengio, and Courville | Deep Learning, MIT Press, 2016; print ISBN 9780262035613. | Preserve Book as the item type. The publisher lists a different ISBN for the ebook. |
Try the separate missing-fields teaching record. We deliberately removed SP, EP, and DO from the CVPR paper. This is an edited exercise, not evidence of an error in the publisher's export.
The record still parses as one conference paper with four authors. Its generated output lacks the page range and DOI. The formatter can produce a plausible-looking line from incomplete data. Our offline conversion did not recover those fields from the surviving URL.
Open the CVF record to restore pages 770-778, and check the DOI against the registered Crossref record. Edit the existing item's Pages and DOI fields, then regenerate the bibliography. Importing the complete file again can leave another copy to reconcile. If a field cannot be verified, keep it flagged rather than guessing a value.
Export IEEE references and reconcile the list
Select the three corrected items, right-click, and choose Create Bibliography from Items…. Choose IEEE as the citation style and Bibliography as the output mode. Save as RTF for a formatted document, save as HTML for a browser-readable list, or copy to the clipboard.
Export Items serves a different purpose. It saves bibliographic data in a format such as RIS or BibTeX. Choose Create Bibliography when you want the numbered IEEE reference text. If IEEE is absent from the style selector, add it through Zotero's citation-style settings.
Compare your result with the formatted three-reference example or download its plain-text output. The example assigns journal [1], conference [2], and book [3] in that supplied order. Check that the paper's page range and DOI appear, and that the book retains its publisher and year.
| Run | RIS records | Parsed items | Formatted entries | Field result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Complete sample | 3 | 3 | 3 | Journal, conference, and book fields retained. |
| Teaching record alone | 1 | 1 | 1 | Pages and DOI remain absent until repaired. |
The teaching file represents the same CVPR paper, so it adds no new unique source to the three-record sample. If you import both downloads together, account for four records representing three works. Resolve that duplicate before counting your final bibliography.
For your own file, record the number imported, any rejected records, intentional exclusions, and duplicate merges. Then count the selected items and exported entries. Inspect attachments and notes separately; they are not additional references. When a count differs, identify the affected source before proceeding.
The RIS file does not record where you first cite a source in your manuscript. Put the final list in citation order and match every in-text number to it. A pasted list needs manual updates when that order changes. Use the existing IEEE in-text citation guide for repeats and renumbering.
Using a RIS file with this IEEE generator
The IEEE Citation Generator currently imports .bib files. Convert RIS before using that importer. To use this site, import and correct the RIS records in Zotero, export the selected items as BibTeX, then follow the BibTeX to IEEE import guide. Keep the RIS original and check the second conversion's field mapping and counts. If Zotero's bibliography already supplies the result you need, save that output directly.
